Operation Weed and Seed is a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) initiative designed to reclaim, restore, and rebuild neighborhoods, by "weeding" out the criminal element, then "seeding" the community with services that support neighborhood revitalization. Currently, there are over 300 sites throughout the United States.

The "weed" component of the strategy requires the

active involvement of residents, businesses and law enforcement. The "seed" component depends on the involvement of these same parties, along with a variety of other public and private agencies.

The DOJ competitively awards recognition for a five-year period to communities that meet its selection criteria and that develop a community-based strategic plan. For more information on the national initiative, visit http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/ccdo.
