In 1997, under the direction of community leaders, the Hawaii U.S. Attorney's Office applied for and received Weed and Seed recognition for the Kalihi-Palama-Chinatown area (Site I). In five years, the strategy proved itself successful, reporting significant reductions in crimes:

Part I Crimes Down 66%
Includes Murder, Larceny Theft and Aggravated Assault

Part II Crimes Down 75%
Includes Assaults, Vandalism, Prostitutions, Weapons Offenses and Drug Laws

In spring 2002, in its fourth year of operation, the site's leadership requested recertification to strengthen and expand its successful strategies to include neighboring communities to the original Kalihi-Palama-Chinatown site. The request for expansion included heading westward into Kalihi Valley and expansion eastward to include the Ala Moana and McCully neighborhoods. This expansion certification was awarded in 2003, and will expire at the end of June 2008.

There are two other official sites on Oahu: Waipahu was Hawaii's second Weed and Seed site (expired in June 2005); and Ewa - Ewa Beach is Hawaii's third site.
